It's okay to have an unsatisfied heart

Think of a time you experienced profound beauty. A mountaintop soaring above the vast horizon. The stone vaults of an ancient cathedral. A golden beach kissed by white foamy waves. Think of it now and hold it in your imagination.

Did you feel it?

That longing at the bottom of your heart? That little tweak you feel when you are absorbed into something beautiful? That deepest corner that still rustles around, searching, even when you couldn’t name a single thing you want?

You’re not crazy or too demanding or hard to please. You simply want, more than anything else, eternity and God. And nothing but eternity with the eternal God Himself can satisfy that desire.

It isn’t endless flaws in your friendships, deficiencies in your marriage, problems in your career, “society” or “culture” or lack of anything you can name that makes your heart tweak even in moments of should-be bliss. It’s that no one but God is God. No quantity or quality of thing, experience, or relationship can substitute.

What a massive freedom there is in realizing that we are not bound to the endless frustration of trying to extract from earth or from others or even from ourselves what can never be extracted.

Your heart is made for more than you can even imagine, and your whispering question, What else is there?, indeed has an answer—more beautiful and satisfying and freeing than you could ever hope, because the answer is a Person who loves you.
