Happy Mother’s Day!
Motherhood is a vocation held not only by natural mothers, but in some sense, by all women. Every woman—in her body and soul—bears a call to maternity, which St John Paul II says is the welcoming and carrying of another life, “giving it room, respecting it in its otherness." The saints are lanterns that illuminate the narrow way and every vocation on it. As you read their words here, notice which stand out to you. Consider choosing that quote to be your focus for prayer and contemplation this week. And don’t forget to add one of these sacred quotes to your Mother's Day cards.

The history of every human being passes through the threshold of a woman’s motherhood.
+St John Paul II
The loveliest masterpiece of the heart of God is the heart of a mother.
+St Thérèse of Lisieux
The vocation of a mother is above all to give love.
+St Gianna Beretta Molla
If you want to bring happiness to the whole world, go home and love your family.
+St Teresa of Calcutta
I gave birth to him in the flesh so that he might be born again in spirit.
+St Monica (referring to her son, St Augustine)
She labored more in giving me birth to eternal life than she did in bearing me in her flesh.
+St Augustine of Hippo (referring to his mother, St Monica)

+St Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein)
I do not have the strength to bring them up; I entrust them to the good Lord.
+ St Zélie Martin

The mother is the heart of the family and, by her love, draws all into a unity that reflects God’s own communion.
+St John XXIII
Children learn more by the eye than by the ear. Let your life be their book.
+St Francis de Sales
In giving themselves to others each day, mothers create a culture of life.
+St John Paul II
When we had our children, our ideas changed somewhat. We lived only for them. They were all our happiness, and we never found any except in them. My husband is a saintly man, and we help one another to bear the difficulties of life.
+ St Zélie Martin
We must often draw the comparison between time and eternity. This is the remedy of all our troubles.
+St Elizabeth Ann Seton
The Most Important Person on earth is a mother. She cannot claim the honor of having built Notre Dame Cathedral. She need not. She has built something more magnificent than any cathedral—a dwelling for an immortal soul, the tiny perfection of her baby’s body. . . The angels have not been blessed with such a grace. They cannot share in God’s creative miracle to bring new saints to Heaven. Only a human mother can. Mothers are closer to God the Creator than any other creature; God joins forces with mothers in performing this act of creation. What on God’s good earth is more glorious than this: to be a mother?
