Something beautiful: Pearls

Portrait of Mrs Asher B Wertheimer, John Singer Sargent, 1898

When I visit the New Orleans Museum of Art (free on Wednesdays for Louisiana residents!), I always marvel at this iconic Sargent portrait—specifically, this pearl necklace detail. (The whole painting is full-length portrait of the subject.) Look closely at the necklace and you'll realize that it's just a swipe of taupe-gray paint dotted with white, and yet your eyes see luminous pearls. Our world, all of creation, is fashioned by an Artist who makes sees luminous beauty in all He has made.
