Bust of Maria Duglioli Barberini, Giuliano Finelli, circa 1626
Finelli was an apprentice to the renowned and frequently Vatican-commissioned Bernini. He sculpted this bust of Pope Urban VIII’s niece, Maria Duglioli Barberini, who died in labor. Threatened by his assistant's talent, Bernini refused to allow Finelli to present this work to the pope. It lives now in the Louvre, where you can be rendered breathless by how Finelli rendered the finest lace and embroidery from cold marble.
