The most free

You do not belong to the world (John 15).

Who is the freest person you know? The freest person to have ever lived? There’s a faulty and dangerous trend of thinking of freedom as ‘you do you’ or ‘I don’t care what anyone thinks.’ How absurd. How empty. How isolating. Real freedom is being free from all the insecurities, pressures, fears, lies that stop us from doing the highest, fullest, most selfless good.

I think of Mary. The most free. Free to wholly give herself to love. Her freedom comes from her courage, and her courage comes from her security, and her security comes from knowing clearly her identity.

And it matters because freedom is essential to authentic love.

And as St John Paul II said, "Freedom exists for the sake of love."

You do not belong to the world, with its false labels and false measures of worth and its insatiable appetite for power and consumption. You are, as St Josephine Bakhita said, "definitively loved and awaited by this love."

The more we belong to love, the more free we will be.
