Thérèse shared artistic talent with her mother (a maker of finely crafted lace) and her sister Céline, who declined a professional painting career to enter the Carmel. In Lisieux, the Carmel contains a spectacular museum filled with the Little Flower's personal effects, notebooks, clothing, and a variety of artworks. Thérèse painted this oyster shell after the mother superior moved her from sacristy work to painting duty.

I often wonder if painting this tiny scene was when she first thought,

"The world's thy ship and not thy home."
